I started to get serious about health issues for dogs once mine started having them at the age of six. Instead of wasting time watching TV, lately, I have been studying ways to ensure my dogs have the longest lives possible.

Those of you that know me also know that I believe the number one cause of health issues with dogs is commercial dog food. That is why I have been on a mission to spread the word about the best dog food, and I am a big believer in homemade dog food.

The truth is most people, even if they do switch to a homemade diet, will need to supplement with some brand of commercial food. That is why I spend so much time on the best dog food subject.

During my research I come across many debates on different ingredients, and one such ingredient is meat by products. This could be listed as chicken, poultry, beef or just about any type of meat followed with the word by-product.

What does it contain and is it any good for your pet? If you really get into this matter, you will discover there are two different groups, one the feels that by-products are just fine, and the other that feels that they are unhealthy to feed your dog.

It may depend, lets look at what defines a poultry by-product.

“Poultry by-products consists of the ground, rendered, clean parts of slaughtered poultry carcass, including necks, beak, feet undeveloped eggs and intestines, exclusive of feathers, “except in such amounts as may occur unavoidably in good processing practices”The problem is you don’t know what is in a by-product ingredient at any give time. There is no standard that says there are so many feet and so many intestines or any consistency of nutritional value what so ever. The truth is none of this stuff is fit for human consumption.

There are some who will make the argument that because some of the by-product ingredients are what the dog would actually eat in the wild, they are fine for them to eat in a dog food. Even if this is the case it is tantamount to saying that because homeless people eat out of garbage cans, dumpster food is great for everyone else, too.

Since I plan on feeding my dogs the best food possible, by-products will remain in the trash and won’t be found in any of the food I provide.

Do you think, just because a dog food brand is well known that it makes it the best dog food for your dog? After studying the matter I’ve come to the conclusion that people are aware of a  brand not because it’s particularly healthy but because it’s a brand that can afford some heavy advertising.

Sadly the best dog food for your dog is probably not even being sold in your Vets office. I’ll bet that 90% of Vets that sell dog food are selling Science Diet, yet it does not meet the requirements to make my top ten best dog food list.

Because my dog started to have Seizures, I started to research to find out how to pick the best dog food available to keep him healthy. After some research I could determine the contents of dog food better than my own food.

As I carried out more studies of dog food, the unethical scenario of commercial dog food became clearer to me, which was main problem.

I quickly realized if I was going to be able to find the best dog food for my dogs, I was going to need to educate myself about the Pet food industry.

The laws are weak and the industry is basically self regulated, allowing deceptive wording on labels and fooling pet owners into thinking they are buying nutritional value where none exists.

There is only one law out there that helps us choose the best dog food, and that is the one stating that all ingredients must be listed in order of decreasing weight. So if the first ingredient is a corn product, it doesn’t matter if the name on the bag says Chicken dinner delight, the main ingredient by weight is the corn product.

Do yourself a favor and ignore the name on the bag and take a look at the ingredient list to determine what the food really is. The first few ingredients sound like something you should probably know what is, but in reality they are probably something completely different.  Even so from that point on things become even more difficult.

As you start to look at ingredient lists, your going to see healthy sounding ingredients like dried egg products.  Don’t be fooled this particular ingredient is anything but healthy.  The only thing healthy in dried egg products is the word egg, and the last I checked you can’t eat a word. Why do you want to feed your dog food with ingredients that need to be marked not fit for human consumption before sold? The same thing with Chicken by-products, this is a far cry from any chicken you would throw on the grill for supper tonight.

Though some of the listed ingredients are self explanatory, there are preservatives and vitamins added that may be unnecessary and hard to identify.

I have learned what to look for in the best dog food on the market.

You want your dog to eat healthy and when you look at the ingredients on these 10 dog foods and then do a check against what is available at your vet’s, you will see the need to take a personally proactive approach.

Because it is so difficult to find good answers to pet problems, dog parents usually just do the best that they can, this sometimes works out, but often it ends up being bad for both them and their dogs.

Studies show that eighty present of pets left in shelters are because the owners had a problem they didn’t know how to correct. Most case is because the owner picked the wrong breed for their family and or the area they live.

I wish it was that easy, but the deceptive wording used by the dog food industry makes it a bit more difficult.

The truth is finding the best dog food brands are much harder than finding healthy foods for you or me to eat.

Unfortunately, pet food manufactories have the ability to use ingredients that are not suitable for human consumption. In fact, they can even use left over by-products and call them healthy sounding names to fool you into thinking they are good for you pet!

You would think if you seen dried egg product listed as an ingredients in your dog food that that would be a healthy thing. What it really means is egg shells of all kinds and other tissues that cannot be consumed by human beings, may be found in it.

I found a list of 68 ingredients while doing research for the best dog food brands, that if any ore founf on your dog food label; stop feeding that brand to your dog. 41% of these ingredients can actually be fatal, maybe not right away but they will shorten your pets life.

I do know that there are only nine types of dog food in America that were deemed healthy enough to actually end up on the best dog food brands list.

A number of the best name brands in dog foods are on the list of 27 brands considered but failing to make the final list. Product brands such as Iams, Science Diet and Eukanuba were not included on the list.

On account of the stated reasons, six brands were eliminated from this second report.
Matter of fact the report lists the reason why good or bad for every brand in the report.

Because of my finding of what goes into commercially made dog food, I now feed my dogs a homemade dog food diet. Even knowing what I know there are times that it is just easier to open a bag and pour some food, but I refuse to compromise the health of my dogs. That is why I continued to do research until I found a reliable source for the best dog food brands to supplement my homemade food.

The pet food industry can’t hide the facts that commercially made pet foods are slowly posing pout dogs. The only smart thing to do is to change to a homemade dog food diet. The toxic waste and useless fillers that provide little nutrients for our dogs are the reason we should stay away from commercial products.

 We are all praying that this doesn’t happen again, but in reality we know it will. The dog food recall alerts have not stopped, there has been many since 2007, just not one as big. Even though these smaller recalls are not getting the media hype, they are still killing our pets.

It rips my heart out when I think about how full of life my yellow lab was just six weeks earlier from the day I buried her in the yard. You feel helpless when you are told by the vet that her systems are shutting down one by one and there is nothing that can be done to help her.

You pray that she’ll get better, but when her breathing becomes so labored that you hear her in the next room you know it’s time. You were praying this day would never come and you know this is the last ride the two of you will have together while she is still alive.

This is the hardest decision you ever had to make but when she licks your hand and looks at you with the pleading eyes you know it’s time You stroke her head and kiss her continually until one last kiss you feel the last breath rush from her body.

You can hardly drive with the tears poring from you eyes, and when you place her in the grave you dug in the back yard, you think about joining her. The only friend that truly gave you back unconditional love no matter what you did.

The research I’ve done since I lost my best friend has me convinced that it’s just a matter of time before all commercially made dog food ends up having a recall. We must figure out a better way to feed our pets.
